Happy 2nd
day of Kwanzaa!
The 2nd Pricipal is Kujichagulia (koo-jee-chah-goo-LEE-uh): Self-determination
--To define ourselves, names ourselves, create for ourselves and speak
for ourselves rather than to allow others to do these things for us.
----------------------------
The Secret
Project est fini!
Just in time because my sis is coming to visit! (I'm now doing the Happy
Dance.) Woo-hoo!!!
I'm now working on 2 pairs of socks and a second pass at the Bucket o'
Chic. Pray fer me.
And well,
it looks like another of my favourite shows has been unceremoniously dumped:
Firefly.
(Thank goodness I have a VCR and know how to arm it.)
Seems like after sheduling it on a Friday night...and moving it around
during the World Series, Fox didn't want to give this show a chance to
be found.
Bastards.
I guess they figure their core audience would rather see "Joe Millionaire",
"American Idol" and other realitycrap than a well written, well
acted space western.
I guess we should be thankful that: 1) The X-Files debut was at a time
when that network was willing to give something new and edgy a chance.
It wouldn't make the cut these days; and, 2) They didn't kill "24"
last year like they were planning to before all of the Emmy and Golden
Globe nominations started rolling in.
*sigh*
If I don't
post again beforehand, Happy New Years, y'all:
2003?
Bring it on.

Finally
updated the Project Gallery. Still haven't photographed my black
pullover, but it's black and my toy digital camera doesn't do it justice.
But I did add a picture of The Secret Project!!
Also,
look
what I got for Christmas! Well, actually, look what I made myself for
Christmas: Fiber

We
had our office Xmas Party by having pizza, an End-of-the-Year meeting,
and then we called it an early day and the boss took us all to the movies!
I was worried that I wouldn't have a job at year's end, but such is not
the case.
Anyway, we went to see: Scorcese's Gangs
of New York.
It was better than I thought it'd be.
As for DeCaprio, I almost pretty much forgot I was watching DeCaprio.
I said almost. Mostly because Daniel Day-Lewis was amazing. In a scary,
psycho, complelling kind of way.
Oscar nomination for him. Y'all heard it here first.
(OhandCameronDiazplayedTheGirl.)*
Long story short, the movie deals with anti-immigrant sentiments in New
York around the time of the Irish influx, the various gangs of native-borns
and immigrants (and we're not talkin' the Jets and the Sharks here) who
fought in the streets, politics, the Civil War, and events leading up
to the Civil War Draft Riots that happened in New York.
Oh, and "family".
Which makes it perfect holiday fare!
(If you watched Ken
Burns's The Civil War, and you should have, you might remember
the part about the Draft Riots that lasted for almost a week.)
The music is wonderful and evocative, and produced by Robbie Robertson.
See it? Yes.
Here's a couple of well-written reviews: SF
Gate and L.A.
Weekly
*Cameron
Diaz was miscast in this picture. I don't think she has the acting chops
to play the part in which she was cast.
The
thing that amazed me after the film was when I mentioned that I had no
idea that the Draft Riots lasted for 4 days. One of the adults I was with
said, "That actually happened?!"

Happy
(belated) Winter Solstice!
Solstice means
"Sun standing still."
My
felted Bucket
o' Chic (click link and scroll to Dec 21) hat is a big freakin'
disaster.
*sigh*. It's not that it's unwearable, it's just that it's not a bucket
hat...which I really, really wanted for Xmas.
This is miserable. I feel like I do when I ruin food, only I ruined a
skein of Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride worsted.
I know, I know: $7 isn't a whole lot of money (well, it's $7 that could
go into my gas tank)....but it's the principal of the thing.
It almost makes me afraid to put the finishing touches on the Secret Project
'cause I'll bollocks it up somehow.
*sigh*
Sorry, y'all. I'm a Virgo. If it's not perfect...it's a failure and is
unacceptable.
I think I'll go eat some fudge now. For breakfast.
Later...

Oooooh!
Trent Lott's resignation!!!! Just what I've wanted since 1996!!!
Gee, thanks Santa!
(I wonder if a shiny one-term Shrub presidency is in that other box over
there?)
Trent
Lott and his scary rug have left the building. Well, the room, anyway.
All I can say is, "Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way
out and knock the rug off'n yer head."
I'm sure Shrub gave Trent the call and said something to the effect of
"Wish you could stay, I don't have a problem with what you said...whatever
it was...but there's gonna be elections in a couple o' years and...well..."
Some of us weren't surprised at the frogs that came out of Lott's mouth.
We've heard that shit from him and his cronies for years.
For decades, even.
Unfortunately, all he said was what a lot of Americans believe. Yep, there
are still people who believe that if it weren't for the "troublemakers",
and that if certain people had won certain elections...well, you know.
You heard it. I sure have.
And even if it no longer surprises me, it still momentarily stuns to hear
it insinuated oh, so politely, mind you.
*sigh*
Where's
my knitting....

The
first clog of a pair of felted clog slippers is done!
I also finished my little poncho thing and I must say, it's a good thing
that I did the experimental version with the less expensive yarn.
Actually, it turned out OK. Even though I added stitches and inches to
the pattern, it still turned out a little shorter and tighter than I want,
but it's wearable nonetheless. Back to the calculator!
*Just
so you know...I'm not that big. It's just that I'm outside of the
5'4"-5'6" standard.
Speaking
of standards, did you know that the average American woman is about 5'4"
and 152 lbs?
The average American man is 5'9". (No one really gives a damn how
much he weights.
(More interesting facts
HERE.)
Back in my Mom's day, there was a tall shop called The "Over 5'7"
Shop. I have a dress and a coat she got from there back in the late 50s.
The label is still intact in both pieces.

Except
for steaming/blocking and the sewing on of buttons, the Secret Project
est fini!
Finding buttons for this gem is going to be fun. I don't want something
fancy...nor something too plain. You know how you know what you want,
and you'll know it the moment you see it?
Now
I'm in sock/slipper/hat/scarf land until the after the holidaze.
My
next project (for me this time) will be a little capelette. Went to Michael's,
got some cheap-o yarn and started a practice version to get my sizing
calculations all worked out. $7 is a good investment for experimentation.
The "real" version will be made of Brown Sheep Lamb's Pride
Superwash and Noro's
Silk Garden. The pattern calls for the whole thing to be made of Silk
Garden...which is an absolutely lovely hand painted blend of mohair, silk
and lambswool. But 5 balls at $11 a ball? Uh...I don't think so. Not on
my budget, thank you.
The piece will start out as black Brown Sheep then I'll use one whole
ball of Silk Garden, then the rest of the piece will be black.
It'll still be really pretty.
Oh!
Speaking of Noro: Check out Bonne Marie's reincarnated Noro Kureyon
(I love that name!) pullover! Go HERE
and scroll down to Dec 14th.
She made the sweater and later decided to steek it, add button bands and
a new collar and cuff and voila!
The little unwanted pullover becomes a chic and adorable cardigan!
Bonne Marie...you go girl!
And
one more thing...despite what my Weather Pixie is wearing, yours truly
is wearing sweaters and scarves.
57 degress may seem downright tropical if you happen to be in, oh...say
Green Bay...but here in Vegas, I'm in a jacket.

It's
true: I
haven't completed The Secret Project yet, but it's almost done and I'm
feeling the stirrings of Startitis, trying to decide what I covet the
most right now. (No, not a Jaguar...despite those stupid, obnoxious ads.)
Do I want a cool and chic ChicKnits Bucket-O-Chic
hat? Mais, oui!
Or chic and cool Knitty A
Capella capelet? Of course!
Actually, I'll probably first make a luxurious little muffler from the
yarn left over from Secret Project.
Speaking
of Secret Project: one side done. Started to work on the 2nd side this
morning when I found myself wide awake at 4 am (sheesh) but I'll wait
until tonight.
It took me the whole of la0st night's episode of Taken
to do side one.
Back
to ads, I'm really finding the Holiday ads particularly...I don't know...galling?
Especially those jewelry ads: "Show her just how much you love
her...". Puh-LEEZE!
I don't know. Maybe I'm just not a girly-girl or something, but I figure
if a dude's gonna shell out $3,000 on me for a present, rather than some
diamond bracelet or earrings or ring, I'd much rather he just take me
by my little hand, walk me into to the local Mac
Store and show me how much he loves me by hooking me up with something
I'd actually use: a brand
new rig.
(Or
a gift certificate from my LYS...or
Rowan Club membership.)
Santa,
Baby...
I've been as good as I could possibly be,
so how about a new G4 for me?
Oh, hurry down my chimney tonight!

"Jimmy
Carter will probably not go down in American history as the most effective
president, but he is certainly the best ex-president the country has ever
had." --Gunnar Berge, chairman Nobel awards comittee
Jimmy Carter
has finally been awarded the Nobel
Peace Prize.
----------------------------------------
And speaking
of peace...has it really been 2 decades ago that John
Lennon was killed?
On December 8th, 22 years ago I was here in Vegas having gotten a position
in the then MGM Grand's production show "Jubilee".
I heard about his death while waiting at a fast food drive through.
It was weird. Back then it was weird and stunning because who the hell
would kill a...a musician?
War
is over if you want it. --- Lennon & Ono
----------------------------------------
And finally...last
night while watching MNF (no I didn't really care that the Dolphins won)
and waiting for the newest episode of Taken
to begin, I started assembling The Secret Project!
Oh my...I think it's going to be very nice.

2 Good Things:
1)
It's FRIDAY!!! Woo-hoo!
2) The new Knitty is live and like the first issue, this one is
packed with some wonderful designs.
Kudos to the contributors for a fine 2nd issue!! Y'all
rock.

Apparently the Weather Pixie lives where 49 degrees is considered "sweater
weather". Sheesh.
Well, just call me a delicate hothouse flower 'cause I'm freezin' my ass
off. You're right. I wouldn't last a winter if I lived on the East Coast.
Which is exactly why I don't live there.
That's capital "w"-i-m-p, if you don't mind.

Whew, it's
about time! My Weather Pixie finally put a coat on!
Yeah, yeah
I know: those of you who are living in places like Illinois and Michigan,
where it's like snowing and 20 degrees, are saying "What the heck
is she talking about? It's 43 degrees there! At least it's warm!"
Hey, I've
been wearing sweaters and jackets and scarves since it hit 70 degrees.
See, when
the ambient temperature is below oh, say 80 degrees, I get cold. While
others can sit comfortably under an a/c vent... even if it's over 100
degrees outside? I'm freezeing.
(Maybe I
need to exercise more or something.)
All I know is that Miss Weather Pixie was just wearing long sleeves. Now
she's wearing a coat and scarf...just like I am!
These days I'm living in my chenille
buttonhole scarf.
The yarn was originally going to be a pillow, but it wasn't turning out
like I wanted so I carefully frogged it and the yarn was in a bag for
almost a year.
Mmmmm....toasty. And very, very chic.
In the meanwhile...The
Secret Project will soon be completed, I've started the 2nd of a pair
of Opal socks and I have a Berrocco Chinchilla scarflet to start.
And Holy
Crap, Batman: The first week of Decembre is almost done!!
Once again
I'm feeling a bit overwhelmed during the impending holidaze. So much so
that this morning I think I started to talk myself out of putting up my
tree this year. Which is kinda sad because my tree isn't exactly what
you'd call "traditional".
It's covered with the Hallmark Star Trek series of collector's ornaments.
More on that later. The Powerpuff Girls is over, the X-Files has started
(thank you Sci-Fi Channel...and
by the way, "Taken" rules) so it's now time
to get ready for work.
Ah...the life of a wage slave. But I refuse to bitch because at least
I have a job. I am very thankful and you better believe that, baby.

Today, December
1st, is World Aids Day.
No matter what your age, background, sexual orientation, race, gender...whatever.
AIDS is not just a "gay" thing.
It is a Global situation that has the potential to have an impact on everyone
in the world.

So, I'm starting another felted bag. It's a bit bigger than the little
bucket I have, and it will have a pocket in the lining.
A friend has offered the use of her digital camera...a real one,
unlike my toy one...so when it's finished I'll have a decent picture to
show.
And I think when it finally warms up in here, I'm going to do some more
work on The Secret Project. There's a distinct possibility that I might
be finishing this thing by the end of the week!
Yipeeeeee!!!!!
